REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS:

"

Ultimately, Gravity is a stunning flick because for all the technical excess that went into making it, you won't ever notice it. It uses the most intense technology we've ever developed for film leveraged to make an intimate portrait about what it means to be a real person who feels fear and pain. This film is about everything we as people are capable of and how it goes to shit if we don't check ourselves. And that message applies to space just as much as it applies to the art of making movies.

It continues the arc of Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Life of Pi, each outdoing its predecessor in the filmmaker’s eternal quest to astonish us, each blending digital technology and human artistry. In depicting the fearful, beautiful reality of the space world above our world, Gravity reveals the glory of cinema’s future; it thrills on so many levels.

Simply put, this is special effects filmmaking that smashes the standards set before it, and while we've all seen some great movies set in space, Gravity is a space movie that looks and feels unlike any you've seen before. And while I know Gravity was made possible through computer animation that would've melted the brains of the geniuses who made 2001, I still found myself wondering over and over again, when I wasn't gripping my armrests, exactly how they were pulling all this off, just as I still feel today watching 2001 more than 40 years since it was released.

In the end, Gravity is one of those movie events that comes around once in a great while to remind us why theatrical viewing still holds potential for a unique and unequaled cinematic experience. As a story and character vehicle for Bullock, it would still rate as a four-star movie – but given what CuarĂ³n has done here for film as a medium, Gravity is nothing less than a five-star 2001 space odyssey for a whole new generation of movie lovers. Take the ride.
