Nucky Thompson
Nucky (Steve Buscemi) is the main character in HBO's highly successful crime series Boardwalk Empire. He started out as a semi-criminal county treasurer, but the enforcement of the Volstead Act in America in 1919 turned him into a full-time criminal. Thompson became Atlanta's main distributor of alcohol and got himself mixed with one of the most influential gangsters at the time, such as Joe Masseria, John Torrio, Lucky Luciano and Al Capone, to name a few. Needless to say, Nucky had to kill a few people in order to survive in the competitive business of bootlegging.
Nucky is a charismatic figure in the public eye, but also a very dangerous gangster on professional level. He doesn't let emotions get the best of him when business is concerned. Patience is a virtue and no one knows that better than him. Thompson calculates his every move with great care. He's killed when a compromise would have made more sense, and has turned his other cheek when most people would have retaliated. In time, however, everyone pays what he owes him one way or another.

Thomas Shelby
Tommy (Cillian Murphy) is the protagonist in the new British crime series Peaky Blinders, which follows a real-life gang from the 1920's (the Peaky Blinders) in their attempt to climb up the ladder. Set in the same period as Boardwalk Empire, this drama series gives its audience a fresh story, which centers around a family-run gang's battle with the law and other organizations, like IRA. Drugs and alcohol have no value in this show. Rather, the focus is put on gambling and political causes.

Tommy assumes control of the gang not by force, but thanks to his witts. The oldest brother in the family and previous leader, Arthur, recognizes his younger brother's talents and lets him get in charge early in the first season. Tommy proves to be an excellent commander. Like Nucky Thompson, Tommy is very smart and patient. He doesn't kill, unless no other option is available.
What Nucky lacks, however, is combat skills, of which Tommy has plenty. All men from the Shelby clan took part in World War I, where they survived horrible life-and-death situations. That made Tommy a hard man and a fearless leader.
