TCM

Memorial Day Movie Marathon
Saturday MAY 23rd - Monday MAY 25th

Details via TCM:

This Memorial Day weekend TCM remembers those who have lost their lives serving our country by showcasing a marathon of movies covering conflicts that range from the Civil War to Vietnam.

Civil War dramas range from The Red Badge of Courage (1951), with real-life war hero Audie Murphy as a Union soldier dealing with personal issues of cowardice and valor, to Glory (1989), the story of the first African-American unit of the Union Army, with Oscar winner Denzel Washington as a heroic ex-slave. World War I is represented by the classics Wings (1927), an American silent directed by William Wellman, and Westfront 1918 (1930), a German film by G.W. Pabst.

The many WWII films include several that were made contemporaneously with the war, such as Uncertain Glory (1944), Edge of Darkness (1943), Reunion in France (1942), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) and Assignment in Brittany (1943). Those looking back from later years include D-Day the Sixth of June (1956), Hell to Eternity (1960), Battle Cry (1955), Battle of the Bulge (1965), The Dirty Dozen (1967) and The Great Escape (1963).

The Korean Conflict is represented by Sam Fuller's The Steel Helmet (1951) while the Vietnam War is depicted by John Wayne's The Green Berets (1968), a salute to U.S. Special Forces co-directed by its star and intended as an antidote to the anti-war, anti-military sentiments of its day.

We salute the TCM Memorial Day Movie Marathon beginning MAY 23rd!

2020 NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT

On the eve of Memorial Day, a star-studded lineup will grace the stage for one of the highest-rated programs on PBS. For 30 years, this multiple-award-winning television event has honored the military service and sacrifice of all our men and women in uniform, their families at home, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Details via PBS:

Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna and Emmy Award-winner Gary Sinise will co-host a special presentation of the National Memorial Day Concert with new performances and tributes filmed around the country and featuring some of the most iconic and powerful segments from past concerts highlighting stories of generations of ordinary Americans who stepped forward and served our country with extraordinary valor in its most challenging times. Woven throughout the program will be messages from prominent guest artists with words of thanks and support for those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.

The 2020 National Memorial Day Concert will pay tribute to the men and women who are doing so much for all of us in the current fight against Coronavirus, and continue the 31 year tradition of honoring and remembering our troops, veterans, wounded warriors, all those who have given their lives for freedom, and their families.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the traditional live concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol will not be held to ensure the health and safety of all involved.

America’s national night of remembrance will feature these performers and more: world-renowned four-time Grammy Award- winning soprano superstar Renée Fleming; Academy Award-nominated actor Sam Elliott; Oscar nominee and Emmy and Tony-Award winner Laurence Fishburne; country music star and Grammy-nominated member of the Grand Ole Opry Trace Adkins; Tony Award-nominated actress Mary McCormack; actor/producer/director Esai Morales; Grammy Award-winning gospel legend CeCe Winans; Tony Award- winning Broadway star Kelli O’Hara; the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly; and a special message from General Mark A. Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Broadway and television star Christopher Jackson will open the show with a poignant performance of the national anthem.

Monday, MAY 25, 2020 - Memorial Day

And last, but not least! It's time for...

*MARK THE 25th!*

Here at "It's a Wonderful Movie" we highlight every 25th day of the month - TOGETHER! - as we Countdown to Christmas! You can also join along!

For all of you Christmas movie fans who wish to participate, simply pick something Christmassy to watch TODAY - on the 25th! It can be a Christmas movie, cartoon, family sitcom or anything you like. (There's only one stipulation - it must be family friendly.) Then, please share in comments below your Christmas choice for the day!

Since this "Mark the 25th" falls on Memorial Day, I have chosen to watch "Holiday for Heroes." I just love a movie that honors our military in such a beautiful way. If "A Veteran's Christmas" is also one of your favorites (as it is mine!) - you will love to know it airs this upcoming Thursday night, May 28th, on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries!

I hope you all have a nice weekend. On this somber Holiday, we honor the brave who died while in military service of our country.

With all States on the path to opening up now in some capacity, it is a wonderful time to celebrate our freedoms today and honor the great sacrifice of the fallen.

Take care, Everyone!

Have a Blessed Memorial Day Weekend, Net
